Painting Lessons

Oil painting lessons · Deest
Step out of your head.
Time for yourself.
A quiet Wednesday evening where you learn to paint, learn to look more closely, and can fully immerse yourself in your own work.
Wednesday evening · Deest · 19:00–21:00

Maybe this sounds familiar.
You'd love to paint. But at home, it never really happens.
You may have taken a course before. Or you painted years ago and would like to pick it up again.
Maybe you mostly want to get better at painting, but keep running into the same things.
Or maybe you don't need one more thing on your list.
You just want a few hours where you step out of the daily rush and focus completely on making something.
No screens. No rush. No pressure to perform.
Just paint, a canvas, and the time to work with attention.
An evening for yourself.
Two hours to look, to paint, and to recharge.

Every Wednesday evening you work on your own painting in my studio in Deest.
We start quietly. You get a focused exercise or explanation tied to the block's theme. After that, you work on your own.
I walk around, look at your work with you, and help when you get stuck or want to take something further.
You don't have to paint the same piece as everyone else.
You work on your own piece, at your own level and your own pace.
Painting with attention.
You don't just learn to make a painting.
You learn to look more closely.
We build a painting step by step.
You learn how to translate a subject onto the canvas, and how to use form, light, colour and material deliberately.
We work with, among other things:
sketch · imprimatura · grisaille · oil colour · glazing
This is the way I've worked since 2016, following the teaching of Paul van Ernich.
You don't just learn how to paint something, but above all why you do it.
That makes painting less about guessing and more about looking and choosing with awareness.
Maybe this is for you.
You're welcome if you...
✓ have wanted to paint for a while, but don't quite know where to start
✓ used to paint and want to pick it up again
✓ already paint, but are looking for more depth and guidance
✓ enjoy working with animals or portraits
and:
✓ want to learn to look and paint better
✓ want a fixed moment each week for creative work
✓ enjoy working on your own piece in a calm setting
| From beginner to advanced: everyone works at their own level.
And no, you don't need years of experience.
If you've never held a brush before, send me a message first. Then we'll look together at whether these lessons are a good fit for you.
The group.
8
Maximum 8 participants.
I deliberately keep the group small. That way there's room to guide everyone personally and follow what you're working on at that moment.
You don't have to wait for the teacher to have time.
There's attention for your painting, your questions and your progress.
From 4 participants, the lesson goes ahead.
What a Wednesday evening looks like.
You've spent a moment somewhere other than the daily rush.

You continue working on your own piece. I walk around, look with you, and help where needed.
21:00Wrapping up
Tidy up and head home.
What you get from these evenings.
Not just a painting.
• Rest & focus
Two hours where you step out of the daily rush and focus completely on one thing.
• More insight
You'll start to understand better what you see and why something works in a painting.
• More confidence
Understanding what you're doing makes it easier to make your own choices.
• New techniques
You'll learn to work with the structure and techniques I use myself in my paintings.
• Your own work
You work on your own painting every evening and watch it take shape step by step.
The first block.
Animals in oil, from sketch to painting.
In this first block we build an animal portrait step by step.
You'll learn to look at form, light and relationships, and translate that onto the canvas.
We work from the first sketch through imprimatura and grisaille to colour and glazing.

About me.
Painting has been my passion and my life for more than thirty years.
I've worked full-time as an artist since 2012.
My work hangs in the Royal Stables in The Hague and is part of private collections in the Netherlands and abroad. My work has also been exhibited in Bahrain.
In 2020 I took part in Sterren op het Doek (Stars on Canvas), where I painted a portrait of presenter Eva Jinek.
Painting is my craft. These lessons are based on my own way of working and looking at painting.
I think it's important that you don't just learn what to do, but also understand why you do it.
That's why I keep the group small. There has to be room to ask questions, try things out and receive personal guidance.
