What do we see when we look at a horse? What is real, and what part does our imagination play?

During Museumnacht Amsterdam, two different artistic approaches come together in the historic riding arena of the Living Horse Museum. I will be painting live alongside artist Sjoerd Blokker. We share a fascination with the horse, but each of us gives it form in a very different way.

In my paintings, I start with observation and the visible reality of the horse. I look at its appearance, posture and character.

Sjoerd’s work moves between reality, imagination and the surreal. Where my work seeks recognition, his visual language opens the door to other realities.

Throughout the evening, we will both be working live in the arena. Visitors can follow the painting process up close and see how two different ways of looking take shape.

Nathalie Klomp

Artist Nathalie Klomp is also part of the project. She brings a mysterious dream figure to life, moving between the artists, their work and the audience. Her performance adds another layer to the evening, bringing painting, movement and imagination together.

The result is an encounter between different ways of portraying the horse and the world around it. An evening that invites you to look beyond the familiar image.

The project is curated by Joyce Ter Horst, curator of contemporary equine art.
